Welcome to the Brooklyn Debate Resource Center Website! Here, you will find information about our program, helpful debate tips and links to research, and help for transitioning form high school to college.

Sesame Flyers Debate Center is a collaboration between Sesame Flyers International and the IMPACT Coalition which runs the New York Urban Debate League.  The Brooklyn Debate Resource Center is a place where students can reach, exchange ideas and practice their arguments with the guidance of a full time debate mentor. Sesame Flyers and IMPACT also direct mobile centers to maximize the reach of  these services in other neighborhoods.

The New York Urban Debate League

The IMPACT Coalition (www.impactcoalition.org) established the New York Urban Debate League in 1997 in partnership with the Barkley Forum and the Open Society Institute to institutionalize high school debates in New York City public schools.  This program provides students with critical academic and personal success skills they need to get better grades, go to college and create positive social change.  IMPACT's ground-breaking work led to the creation of urban debate leagues in cities nationwide including Newark, Detroit, Miami, Milwaukee, St Louis, Kansas City, San Francisco Bay, Baltimore Providence and Southern California.  The NYUDL  began with  14 schools and 140 students. Since then IMPACT has facilitated the creation of NYUDL programs in over 90 high schools reaching more than 4000 students in New York City.  Numerous NYUDL graduates have received full four year college scholarships awarded for debate.  The urban debate model has been honored by the White House twice in the last four years for excellence in youth programming.

The IMPACT Coalition

The Improving Mentor Practices and Communication Techniques (IMPACT) Coalition is a mentoring and educational development organization that expands opportunities for urban students, schools and organizational partners by providing debate training, literacy assistance, curricula, and mentoring services to develop informed, concerned citizens. IMPACT advocates debate as a key to success in building healthier communities and tomorrow's leaders.  The Coalition's program reach from 5th grade through college providing support for competitive debate, community debates and classroom debates .

The Associated Leaders of Urban Debate (ALOUD)

Sesame Flyers and the IMPACT Coalition are partners in ALOUD.   ALOUD (www.debateleaders.org) represents a global network of debate and youth expression groups dedicated to helping young people discover their voice and a place in society.   With partners in 3 countries and 20 cities, ALOUD and its partners connect students with the skills and opportunities necessary for success in college and the workplace.
