The New York Urban Debate League
The
New York Urban Debate League was established in 1997 in
partnership with the Barkley Forum and the Open Society
Institute to institutionalize high school debates in New York
Public School. This program provides students with
critical academic and personal success skills they need to get
better grades, go to college and create positive social
change. The NYUDL parallels urban debate leagues funded
by OSI in eleven other cities nationwide including Chicago,
Atlanta, Detroit, St Louis, Kansas City, San Francisco Bay,
Baltimore Providence and Southern California. The NYUDL
which began with ten (10) school (and 235 students has
expanded its outreach to over forty (40) high schools ( and
over 1,400 students ) in New York City. Numerous NYUDL
graduates have received full four year college scholarships
awarded for debate.

The Impact Coalition
Improving
Mentoring Practices and Communications is a non profit, career
development organization dedicated to the empowerment of urban
students through training in debate and workplace dynamics,

College and Queens College. In 1997, thanks to a
partnership with OSL the coalition model expanded to what it
is today. Currently, the coalition model creates debate
teams in urban high schools and colleges and relies upon local
resource centers to successfully maintain urban debate.
