SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2006

WRITTEN BY - Sesame Flyers International Executive Director - Curtis Nelson

Summer is finally here, bringing with it lots of sun energy, plenty of Sesame activities and the perfect time to launch our newest initiative, the Sesame Web letter.  We are constantly driven by the need to communicate more effectively with the tons of supporters and potential donors, all asking the same question; what is Sesame doing?  Thus, we have created the Web letter as a tool to disseminate updated information to our chairman board, advisory boards, members, volunteers, donors, mas players, corporate sponsors, and our truest of supporters, gently pushed via timely email, to dynamically reflect the updates at our website, and our organization.

In this issue we feature “who are our donors”, and why do they donate to us, in an effort to recognize and grow our member donor community.  Reflecting on the last six years, Sesame Flyers has grown steadily in its capacity to deliver services to the East Flatbush and Canarsie Communities.  Annually, over five thousand youth and their families have benefited from any one of our free programs and events.  An accomplishment we are very proud of, along with the distinction that our agency is within the top 7 of the 80 city non-profit Agencies that run Beacon Programs, so says our main funder NYC  Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).  Our restrictive government funding, however, has far outpaced our own ability to raise the necessary unrestricted donor generated funds for non funded expenses, such` as our cultural programs, our building maintenance and repair, general support, scholarships, and under funded programs.

We realize that the East Flatbush and Canarsie communities have long been short on youth services in comparison to other neighborhoods.  The resources clearly cannot meet the needs.  And although it seems to some that we are successful, and do so much, we always seem to still come up short; in the eyes of those who did not receive services.  There are too many who do not benefit from our under funded services.  The four hundred Summer Youth Employment (SYEP) jobs we have cannot fulfill the nine hundred applications we field.  Six hundred fifty summer camper slots at three different sites cannot fulfill the eight hundred applications we receive, and the need list goes on.  The reality and the expectation just do not meet.  Disappointment that we failed to deliver needed services is never easy, but disappointment on the face of a 10 year old who cannot get into our under funded, over full, summer camp, or the 16 year old who did not get into our summer youth employment program is even more difficult to accept.  We must do more.  We must find a way.  Why you say?  Because when you celebrate our increasingly successful delivery of services, you began to, rely on us to, need us to, and most of all expect us to, deliver more successes and more services.  You just plain expect us to do more, period.  And will well, but with your help.

Hence we must join the other non profit agencies that share this same challenge from their community like the Prospect Park Alliance, and the YMCA’s, who have employed more modern and effective donor campaigns in order to fulfill our ever growing community needs.  We must seek out those of you individuals, who have the capacity to become a donor member, and support our mission.  Those of you who can appreciate the satisfaction of associating yourself with Sesame Flyers. Those of you can share in the pride we feel when we love a kid today and every day.  Become a donor member today and really celebrate with our successes to come.
