- Sesame Flyers International Debate Team
The Debate Resource Center, located in Winthrop
Beacon, is a collaborative effort between Sesame
Flyers and the IMPACT Coalition. Until recently,
it was fully funded through a grant from George Soros’ Open Society Institute and is now a part
of New York’s new Out-of-School Time program. It
focuses on training New York City high school
students in high-level research and
communication skills in preparation for
participation in competitive debate across the
country. The teamwork and critical thinking
skills students learn there have propelled them
to unprecedented success. This year, students
have debated the pros and cons of curtailing
domestic civil liberties in the current War
against Terrorism.
Recently, students from the Debate Resource
Center competed in the New York Championship
Debates in Albany, New York. Competing against
some of the most elite schools in the city and
state, our students outshone them all. In the
novice division, which is reserved for beginning
debaters, students from the Debate Center took
both First and Second place, with Tamar Brown
and Brittney Norman capturing the honor of New
York State Champions. In the Junior Varsity
division, the Center also performed
spectacularly, winning 3rd through 7th
place. Only Bronx Science outperformed our
students. One student, Shauna Eccles from
Freedom Academy, took the coveted First place
speaker award home in the JV division. Our most
experienced students rounded out our success in
the Varsity division, where we won 3rd
place team. Also, Nuyen Lynch, from ACORN
Community High School, placed 3rd
best speaker and Ben Crossan, from Freedom
Academy, won 5th overall speaker.
Congratulations to all our students, who truly
exemplify everything our participants can
achieve.
