EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Happy Caribbean American Heritage Month! It is an honor for us to celebrate this month with you. Sesame Flyers was recognized with a commendation by the City’s Comptrollers office in honor of our 36 years of service and excellence in our community. It was with great pride that I received this award on Sesame’s behalf. The celebration continues with Sesame Flyers Caribbean Heritage Cultural Gala which is this week Saturday and we are very excited and proud to present our costume presentation for the West Indian parade and showcase some of the best Caribbean performers in the city. This will definitely be a night to remember. I hope to see you all there. The theme for us this year is Visions. We hope to inspire you with positive inspirations for us all.

PAINTED PALETTE
BY LIANA WILSON, SONYC DIRECTOR

It is quite evident that in these trying times our young people need stronger family and community supports. Community based programs like ours here at SFI Compass 211 provide a safe and academically enriching and challenging environment for young people but I deem it equally as important to offer carefully structured programs for my participants with opportunities to acquire the skills that will prepare them for the next step (High School), beyond and life on a whole. Our Children need to be afforded the tools to apply their creative energy and minds to effect change in their own lives and in the future of their neighborhoods and communities.

Through what has become affectionately known as the ‘Painted Palette’ a daily workshop with a niche for the arts developed and implemented by one of our newest additions to our staff, Ms. Nia Imani Wilson, presently a junior at John Jay College. Participants are being taught an understanding of value, color, and proportion and work independently and at their own pace with her guidance. Students are developing the tools needed as well as the confidence to draw maximum expression using minimum lines, how to express emotion using line width, and tell a story without words.

See below for just a few of their stories.

SPRING INTO HEALTH FAIR
BY KENYA ALLEYNE, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BILDERSEE BEACON

On Saturday, May 18th, 2019 Bildersee Beacon held its first annual Spring into Health Fair Event. The event was organized to engage, encourage, empower and expose community residents to an array of holistic services around and from their community. Spring into Health focused on three main topics: awareness and education, lifestyle information, and demonstrations. Various vendors participated in our event such as our local Square Pharmacy, FDNY, Metro Plus, NYPD, Brooklyn Public Library- Paerdegat, Twisted Rootz Juice Bar, Melanin Fit, Primal Fitness, Emergency Management and Children & Family Mental Health. Each vendor played a major role in making our event a success. In addition, our participants were able to dance for their local community and participate in spraying the FDNY water hose. All attendees left filled with much joy and resourceful information for both children and adults.

WINTHROP BEACON EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
SIMONE WARNER - PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF WINTHROP BEACON COMMUNITY CENTER

Hashim Newman aka Haz joined the Sesame Flyers family in spring of 2016. He assisted with movie nights in various parks throughout Brooklyn. In addition to movie nights, Haz was also called to assist at the main office wherever and whenever needed. In February 2018, Haz joined the Lighthouse staff as one of our front desk security. Haz has proved to be punctual, reliable, professional, and pleasant. Due to his welcoming attitude, staff and participants alike are happy to see him upon entering the building.

Haz has been affectionately labeled as “Top Flight Security” by Ms. Simone, Program Director, because she knows that Haz is always on call to ensure no issues arise within the program.  In his spare time, Haz runs his own graphic design business. He designs t-shirts, cups, hats and more. We are happy to have Haz as a part of the Lighthouse!!

SIP, PAINT AND NETWORK!

Sesame Flyers welcomed back local artist Latifah Shadae for a Sip and Paint with a Networking twist. Participants had the chance to network with business minded folks over light refreshments and wine. The event was a great success. We look forward to hosting more Sip and Paint events throughout the summer. Please see our upcoming events section for the next Sip and Paint for June.
