The
Sesame Flyers Steel Pan Orchestra was founded in 1985 by
Winston Monroe. The steel drum, the only instrument
invented in the 20th century, beams with cultural identity and
musical expression which build the pride, self esteem and
confidence our youths need. Called the Ambassadors to
Sesame Flyers, the Steel Orchestra has outreached to an
international audience, carrying the name Sesame Flyers to all
who are touched by their performances. The orchestra
over the years have traveled to Canada for the Caribana
Festival, HArtford, Connecticut and Cape Cod and all over the
Tri State Area.
This
band won the very first competition it ever entered in 1995,
placing first. Adding to their achievements, the band
has received a congressional award from Congressman Floyd
Flake, a certificate if Commendation from City Comptroller
Hevesi, New York City Council DREAM Award from New York City
Council Speaker Peter Vallone, a Certificate of Appreciation
from Patrol Borough Brooklyn South and the 67th Precinct, just
to name a few.
Sesame
Flyers Youth Steel Orchestra has performed for such note
worthy people as former First Lady and Senator Hillary Rodham
Clinton, Assemblyman Nick Perry, City Comptroller Alan Hevesi,
City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, Councilwoman Una
Clarke, Councilman Lloyd Henry, Grace Foods, Sandals Hotels,
BWIA, Air Jamaica, Dance Theater of Harlem, New York Law
School, Macy's and Fox 5 Morning show, to name a few.
As
participants in the Annual Panorama Competition for Labor Day,
our Steel Orchestra can grow up to sixty (60) players.
However, all during the years, twenty five (25) members
participated on a regular basis. Our players must also
maintain a grade point average of 85 in their respective
schools to remain an active member of the band.
