Executive Director's Message

Bildersee’s End of School Celebration

The Bildersee Beacon ended their After School program year with a celebration of awards, song, and dance. The children and staff commemorated a school year of resilience and adaptation as we all adjusted to new COVID guidelines. Here is a snippet of the fun and a chance to meet the Program Director Ms. Jack, and Program Educator, Mr. Thomas.

Employee Spotlight - Sharon Spencer

We are happy to have Ms. Sharon Spencer as a proud new staff member of Sesame Flyers. Ms. Spencer joined the team last summer at the height of the pandemic and provided much needed technical assistance and support to the team. She has been an educator for over 20 years and has held every position from classroom teacher to Principal. In her own words she is a “servant leader.” She mentors teachers and administrators on their journey to becoming master teachers and fellow servant leaders. Yet, she still finds a way into classrooms, both in person and virtual to share her love of science, music, and culture with the next generation.

Ms. Spencer is a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and is a busy mother of six children ranging in ages from 6 to 19. Sesame has become her second home. The cultural aspects of Sesame Flyer’s mission is what drew her attention to the organization. She is an online program facilitator and an educational consultant for the summer youth employment program. Sharing culture is a part of her heritage. Ms. Spencer is also a former Miss Antigua and Barbuda USA, 1997 and is the PR manager for the City South Steel Orchestra of which she plays the single tenor.

Youth Spotlight From The Center For Family Support

The experience of being tested is one that can produces strength and endurance for almost anyone. The COVID-19 pandemic was an adjustment for our youth. Adding a child welfare case during this period isn’t easy for any of our families. However, the combined dedication of individual family members and a committed case planner often results with positive outcomes. The latter can make a huge difference as our youth prepare for a productive future.

The pandemic has affected normalcy within home, work and academic environments. Picture being in Kindergarten, and the only thing you know for certain is change. Imagine being five years old and able to adjust to change much greater than the rest of us can imagine. Well, our “Rosie”, as she is called, continued to push through with her mom and CFS at her side. As some children during the pandemic, Rosie survived a period of domestic violence. This child was able to engage in conversation about her day and speak on her feelings. She survived being in a home with domestic violence and an emergency placement in the shelter system.

There was tremendous progress after Rosie’s living environment changed. The family has successfully secured permanent housing. Showing her room to her CFS worker was amazing celebration, a mutual excitement expressed by child and the worker. When her educational environment changed, from remote to a hybrid setting in two different schools, Rosie pushed through and will now enter the first grade. She successfully graduated and participated in a step up ceremony. Before this change occurred, Rosie invited the worker to her graduation to see just how much she has grown. Now no longer having CFS weekly she is able to log on and report on how her day is going in aftercare services. This worker is hopeful that a proper foundation was laid for Rosie, and that she continues to adjust to life challenges. Rosie, the true definition of Phenomenal. Continue to shine!!!
