REMEMBERING MS. CAROLYN DIXON

We were saddened to learn of the passing of a Sesame Flyers long time Activity Instructor, Carolyn Dixon. Affectionately known as Ms. Dixon, she provided generations of Sesame Flyers International participants and their families seasonal, educational, and cultural hands on Arts and Crafts activities. As an elder of the community, Ms. Dixon was a soft spoken yet firm supporter of our youth creativity and expression. Ms. Dixon had an enthusiasm for the creative arts and shared that love with her elementary and middle school students in our After School, Saturday, and Summer Camp programs for over two decades. A long time participant in the holiday Tree of Love community service event, each year Ms. Dixon looked forward to hand crafting hats, scarves, and other garments to donate to a family in need during the Christmas giving season.

Sesame Flyers International is grateful for her steadfast devotion to our children. She will be dearly missed. We ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of transition.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

It’s a great time to be a woman. As you may know, March is Women’s History month. In this edition of the Newsletter we are highlighting the young girls and women here at Sesame Flyers. I am blessed to work with women who personify grace, compassion, and love for the work we do. It makes my job that much more rewarding to be surrounded and supported by excellence. This month is also Social Work Awareness month and we are highlighting a family success story for the Center for Family Support. Given the times we have experienced; I am grateful more than ever to be blessed to see another year of life this month.

As we celebrate women and our staff, it is with great sorrow and sadness to announce the passing of one of our original Winthrop Beacon long time staff members, Ms. Carolyn, who truly lived our moto to Love a Kid today and every day. She will be fondly remembered in all of our hearts.

WOMENS' HISTORY MONTH

"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." - Michelle Obama

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”

These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Source https://womenshistorymonth.gov/about/

SOCIAL WORK & FAMILY SPOTLIGHT!
By Edna Polanco, Case Planner, Center For Family Support Preventive Program.
Initials are used in this article for protect the privacy of the family.

“Perseverance and Determination” are definitely two words to describe the “MT” family. They were referred to the agency due to educational neglect. The MT family consists of a single mother with 7 children. The oldest daughter, who is 16 years old had excessive absences from school and had no interest in academic goals. When the family first signed up for services, they were also dealing with chronic homelessness as well. In fact, they resided in a city shelter for 5 years.

As the assigned Case Planner (CP), I worked diligently with the family providing support, and case management services on a biweekly basis. My focus was always on encouraging them to keep pushing forward and not to give up. Honestly, at first the family was resistant to change. However, during case management counseling sessions, and constant collaboration with the school counselor, this CP was able to inspire the daughter, who was failing, to return to school and complete her schoolwork. To date, the daughter continues to attend school daily and has improved in her grades and academic goals.

In addition, the family was also able to secure permanent housing. The family exited the shelter system and moved into a home where they can call their own.

It is success stories like this one that continue to make the work we do so rewarding. It’s motivating to all workers, when we are able to see a family who lacked belief in themselves flourish into a stronger family unit. With the intervention and dedication from the Center for Family Support, families such as this one, learn tools to continue to prosper and flourish independently after they complete services.

SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL HELPS YOUNG WOMEN FIND THEIR VOICE.

Sesame Flyers International has a commitment to ensure girls find and cultivate their voice, identity and self-image. Girls Speak, our new public speaking class develops girls into confident, self-assured women, through fun and structured activities geared toward positive self-expression. They participate in opportunities to speak on topics of significance, current events, and create signature speeches that are moving and inspirational. Here are two testimonials from girls in the program.

“Girl’s Speak, is great. We all have a chance to learn more of who we are. We get to be ourselves, break down, all around, and fix the problems we didn’t know how. We laugh, and smile and get to wine down while also learning who we are.” Giannica Cicero Garcia

"Girls Speak is a place where I feel supported welcome and included. It's a place where I can be myself with no filter." True Gomez
