Happy Spring everyone! Much like the flowers that are now in full bloom, the programs and activities at Sesame are blossoming and it is beautiful to see. There have been Mother’s Day Celebrations, dance performances, and the return of our signature Family Sports Day coming this June. I am proud to see our community coming back together in person to ensure our communities are well served. I am also looking forward to seeing you at our Caribbean Essence Awards and Scholarship Gala on June 26, 2022, at El Caribe, where we will celebrate and honor a select group of exceptional individuals who generously and tirelessly strive to make our neighborhoods and our people better, stronger, safer and more empowered. At this event, we also award well-deserving, college-bound high school seniors with scholarships in recognition of their academic merit.
We need to ensure our young people
have positive outlets for creative expression instead of turning to
negative behaviors during afterschool hours. You can read more about
Sesame’s involvement at a recent rally to fight for cultural funding. I
want to thank and make a special mention of everyone who helped kick off
our Anniversary Giving Campaign $39FOR39. These donations help ensure we
can continue to provide services and signature cultural activities,
especially at a time when the need for cultural funding is at its
greatest. This campaign will be running all year, so please consider
donating in honor of our 39 years of community service. To donate please

On Thursday, May 19th, 2022 Sesame Flyers supported a rally for an increase in cultural funding at City Hall. This event was organized by New Yorkers for Culture and Arts, (NY4CA) of which Sesame is a member. NY4CA supports strengthening policy, increasing and securing sustainable public funding, and advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion to help ensure a vibrant future for culture and arts throughout New York City. The rally was hosted by Council Member Chi Ossé, who is the Council Member of the 36th District representing Bedford-Stuyvesant and North Crown Heights. He is also the Chair of Culture Affairs and Libraries. Council Member Farah Louis who represents our district was in attendance as well and spoke on behalf of East Flatbush.
The rally was organized to further the request for an additional $100
million investment in NYC Culture and Arts in the city budget. It will
speed NYC’s economic recovery, create an inclusive cultural sector, and
move towards an equitable economy across all neighborhoods in the five
boroughs. Read the plan here and sign on if you’d like to add your name
or the name of your organization. Together we can build a new city with
culture for and by all New Yorkers. |
