EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

It was a great summer for us here at Sesame Flyers! Our summer camps were in full swing, we hired over 600 young people into the Summer Youth Employment Program and we presented Visions for the Labor Day Parade with over a million people in attendance. We feel proud to continue our work in the community with children and adults. We caught the eye of several media outlets and I am happy to share those moments with you in this edition of the Newsletter. Our afterschool programs are back open. I am happy to share that we are continuing to partner with the community and introduce new initiatives in our Beacons and SONYC programs, you can learn more about that in this editions as well.

As we step in to a new season, I want to remind you to keep hold of Your Vision. Something very special happened on Labor Day as we were all dressed and suited to present Visions. For the unofficial end of summer - it rained; it literally rained on our parade. The rain however was a blessing and metaphoric. The joyous response from the masqueraders to the rain made the parade an epic one long to be remembered. There will be storms, and rain where you believe there should be sunshine. What might seems like bad news, a twist, or an unfilled expectation could be the perfect outcome if seen through the unwavering light of Your Vision. I encourage to step into Fall with a renewed sense of purpose and allow the fulfillment of your visions to take shape into reality.

“Live the life of your dreams. Be brave enough to live the life of your dreams according to your vision and purpose instead of the expectations and opinions of others.”
― Roy T. Bennett

SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS IS COMING TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
BY SIMONE WARNER - WINTHROP BEACON PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The Lighthouse was recently approached to host a soccer initiative known as Saturday Night Lights. After learning of the benefits of the program we could definitely not refuse.

Saturday Night Lights (SNL) is a violence prevention and youth-development program funded by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that offers soccer during times when crime levels are at the highest on Friday and Saturday nights. The initiative also offers Academic support and youth advocacy to work with each individual family to ensure that the youth is fully equipped to succeed in middle school, high school and beyond. We are one of the many locations located throughout the city. The Lighthouse is excited to be a host. We look forward to welcoming participants with open arms.

SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL PRESERVING CARIBBEAN CULTURE

Sesame has partnered with Caribbean/The Future project with their signature MOVE & DISCUSS SERIES. It is one of the programs under the Caribbean/The Future project. Living within the frames and myths of cultural inheritance, this program is a questioning of hyper-visible constructions of Caribbean cultural practice and speculates on their evolution, continuation and the kinds of roles they may play in the lives of those who identify with this culture. Each event is structured to open with an artistic activation, followed by a dialogic experience and closed by a community movement ritual, integrating the participant’s whole being into the event and providing real time feedback of the ideas discussed. Bringing together Folk practitioners, Cultural leaders and Caribbean enthusiasts to move, dialogue and share knowledge in a Cultural space.

On Friday September 26 we open the doors of the clubhouse for the first event with the organization for "Caribbean Folk to the Future – What is its role?"

With contemporary cultural production being fast paced, highly visible and increasingly commercialised, practitioners of traditional and folk forms, are tasked with the responsibility of making and maintaining the relevance of their work. The conversation turned the focus to understanding what Caribbean folk practices offer us today and how might they be useful to us in the future, looking at renewed interests, research practices and new age strategies. The goal is to create a space for intergenerational dialogue, cultural exchange and brainstorming around this issue. It was a heart warming event and we look forward to having more in the future.
